Magical Realism with Candice Ransom

Jan 14, 2025

Online event

Join prolific author Candice Ransom for a webinar on magical realism!

Walk into any Barnes and Noble or your public library’s middle grade and young adult sections and you may notice lots of books with the word “magic” in the title or a cover with sparkles or mysterious trees that imply some sort of magic. Magical realism is hot and has been for some time. In this webinar, you’ll learn what magical realism is and what it is not. (Hint: it’s easily confused with fantasy, horror, retold fairy tales, and even science fiction.) I’ve studied magical realism fiction for more than twenty years and am hooked, both as a reader and writer.

After a brief history of the genre, we’ll dive into magical realism’s specific characteristics. Next, we’ll launch into how to develop your idea, how to use your own background, and how to combine setting, folklore and/or legends, and sensory details to enhance your story. We’ll also discuss the differences between middle grade and young adult magical realism novels, using many diverse examples. Join me for a magical evening, with time at the end for questions.

This event will be recorded, and a replay will be available for 30 days after the live event.

Candice is the author of more than 180 children’s and young adult books, including more than 50 middle grade novels. Juneberry Blue (2024), her first magical realism MG, received significant reviews: a gently magical tale that centers nature, ecology, and connection; dreamy descriptions, comforting nostalgia, and close relationships coalesce into a sweet, summery story; filled with mystery, magic, and small-town mythos. She is currently revising her second MG magical realism novel. Candice has earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from VCFA and an MA in children’s literature from Hollins University. She has been teaching in Hollins University’s graduate program in children’s literature for 16 years. She lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with her husband and two high-maintenance cats.
