Rhyme and Facts: Building Fun Nonfiction Picture Books

Mar 25, 2025

Online event

In this webinar, Debra will share her process for writing in rhyme while also maintaining accurate information. She’ll utilize examples from her own books and other rhyming nonfiction books.

Writing nonfiction is challenging—everything must be accurate. Writing in rhyme is challenging—both the rhyme and meter have to be perfect. So writing a rhyming nonfiction picture book can be doubly challenging. . . but certainly not impossible. Why do it? Rhyming nonfiction can be a great hook for your picture book because it’s a great way to make facts fun and accessible for kids. (And, it can be a lot of fun.) In this workshop, Debra will share her process for writing in rhyme while also maintaining accurate information. She’ll utilize examples from her own books and other rhyming nonfiction books.

We will discuss: researching and writing the first draft with rhyming in mind; basics of various meters and how to count stresses and rhythmic feet; revising for both meter and story; writing tools to use when rhyming, and much more. There will be time for questions. This event will be recorded, and a replay will be available for 30 days after the live event.
