Graphic Novel Lab - Get drawing with Author/Illustrator Sharee Miller

Description:

Bring your rough script to this hands-on illustration lab where we will tackle thumbnails, panels, and pacing. This is the stage where your graphic novel comes to life. Come ready to explore your world and characters. This workshop will help move you from ideation to creating as we tackle the first pages of your graphic novel idea!

Skill Level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced):

This lab is best for participants…

Who have a script or fleshed out idea for a graphic novel that they are ready to start thumbnailing.

Prerequisites and Advanced Preparation:

Please bring a completed rough or partial draft script printed for notation and sketching. You will need a pencil or pen and a sketchbook or paper for flushing out your thumbnails.

Schedule:

  • Introduction - thumbnailing, paneling, pacing and first pages (30 minutes)
  • Q&A (10 minutes)
  • One-sentence story statements to guide revision (15 minutes)
  • Guided thumbnailing time (30 minutes)
  • Coffee/snack/stretch/bathroom break (10 minutes)
  • Sharing, discussion, and Q&A (30 minutes)
  • Revision Time: using notes from discussion to enhance mood & pacing. (10 minutes)
  • Small-group discussions: share and receive feedback from peers on story (30 minutes)
  • Final Q&A (10 minutes)
  • Creating post-conference revision to-do lists (5 minutes)

Participants will:

  • Move from writing to visualizing their graphic novel
  • Learn about pacing, paneling and page turns through sketching
  • Visualize dialogue and character interactions
  • Establish world and setting in first spreads to invite readers in
  • Make notes for script revisions
  • Identify moments where text is not needed and art can move the story forward
  • Collaborate with colleagues to strengthen their stories
  • Make a post-workshop to-do list to guide next steps after the conference.
