Want to know how I picked up English?
After four children’s book contracts with publishers in the U.S., many people are amazed that I can write books in English even though I’m a native Hebrew speaker who’s never lived outside of Israel.
Early on, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle the language. I actually thought about quitting. But that’s where SCBWI helped me out.
I decided to go to every single SCBWI Israel meeting held in English. These were often just social events; sometimes there was a speaker or a writing workshop. Whatever it was – I was there. At first, it was tough for me to speak. I didn’t always understand everything, but I never let that stop me. Along the way, I was improving my English: listening, speaking, asking questions, getting to know professional terms, hearing about U.S. authors.
Over the years, my confidence has grown, and I’ve started to feel more comfortable in English. Today, I use English on a daily basis: reading (children’s books, articles and blogs about children’s literature, emails from my agent, editor, and other professionals), writing (books, of course, and also many emails), listening (professional courses, Zoom lectures, conferences), and even speaking (Zoom calls, online lectures, meetings and story hours).
Now, the SCBWI Israel team is introducing a wonderful new initiative to help other Israelis grow more confident in English: monthly Zoom meetings to bring English and Hebrew speakers together. Hebrew speakers can practice using their English in a comfortable, friendly environment through discussions of fascinating topics related to children’s literature and publishing.

רוצים לדעת מנין האנגלית שלי??
אחרי ארבעה חוזים לספרי ילדים עם הוצאות לאור בארה״ב, רבים מתפלאים איך אני כותבת ספרים באנגלית למרות שאני ישראלית, דוברת עברית מלידה, ומעולם לא חייתי מחוץ לישראל. והאמת, זה לא רק כתיבת הספרים. כדי לנהל קריירה סביב הספרים אני משתמשת באנגלית על בסיס יום יומי. אני קוראת באנגלית (ספרי ילדים, כתבות ובלוגים על ספרות ילדים, התכתבויות עם הסוכנת, העורכת ושאר אנשי המקצוע ועוד).
אני כותבת באנגלית (את הספרים כמובן, וגם אימיילים רבים), אני מקשיבה לתכנים באנגלית (קורסים מקצועיים, הרצאות בזום, כנסים ועוד) ומידי פעם גם מדברת באנגלית (שיחות זום, הרצאות אונליין שאני מעבירה, מפגשים ושעות סיפור אונליין לילדים ועוד).
כשעשיתי את הצעדים הראשונים בכיוון השוק האמריקאי חששתי מאוד שלא אצליח להסתדר טוב באנגלית, והייתי חסרת ביטחון, ואפילו חשבתי לוותר על כל העניין. אבל כאן בדיוק נכנסה אגודת SCBWI לתמונה.
בין החברים באגודה בארץ יש דוברי אנגלית רבים. החלטתי ללכת לכל הפגישות שלהם שנערכו באנגלית. הפגישות לפעמים היו פשוט מפגש חברתי עם שיחות על ספרי ילדים, לפעמים הגיע מישהו מעניין לדבר איתנו, לפעמים זו היתה סדנת כתיבה. מה שזה לא יהיה - אני הייתי שם. בהתחלה היה לי קשה לדבר, לחפש את המילים, כשכולם סביבי דוברים אנגלית שוטפת. לפעמים לא הבנתי את כל מה שנאמר, אבל זה לא עצר אותי. הרגשתי איך המפגשים האלה מאפשרים לי להשתמש בשפה האנגלית, להקשיב, לדבר, לשאול. להכיר גם מונחים מקצועיים מהתחום, לשמוע על סופרים אמריקאיים שלא הכרתי. עם השנים, הביטחון שלי בשפה גדל, והמשכתי לאתגר את עצמי יותר ויותר עד שהתחלתי
להרגיש בנוח בסביבת האנגלית.
