MAR 15 - CBCA's A Night with our Stars

When: Friday 15 March 6:30 PM

A Night With Our Stars (ANWOS) is not a SCBWI event but we are including it here as it is a fabulous evening and many of our SCBWI WA members feature in the line-up. Run by the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) WA branch, West Australian authors and illustrators with a children's book published in the past 12 months are invited to present. Each speaker gets three minutes to wow the audience which is filled with librarians, teachers and book sellers. It's always an entertaining evening and a great opportunity to meet people in the industry and watch and learn how different creatives work the stage. More details and tickets here.

Whether you’re looking for a one-off WIP critique or want to join a group, the SCBWI Critique-nics are a great place to dip your toes and test the waters. BYO lunch or grab something from one of the nearby cafes. After lunch, we’ll split into small groups, get on with the important business, and whip some manuscripts into shape.

APR 13 - Til Death Do We Art - Literary Estate Planning for PAL members

What happens to your royalties when you die? Are you prepared for a literary afterlife? Join Frané and Dianne to chat through these big questions, followed by a celebration of life, food and wine. MAY 26 - Child's Play: The Basics of Illustrating Kids' Books - with James Foley

This 3 hour workshop will cover character design, storyboarding, layout, typography, media choice, final art, working with publishers, submitting portfolios to publishers, traditional vs digital. Everything you need to know to get started on your own projects, and will include plenty of time for questions.

SEP 15 - Illustrator Catch-Up: Character Maquette Making Session

Where: Earthwise (pink church) Subiaco

What to Bring: BYO coffee and any new books or projects you want to show and tell, a character you'd like to build a maquette of.

Making miniature 3D sculptures of characters can be really helpful for illustration projects. Choose a character you are developing and come and make a small model of your character using a mixture of professional and around-the house materials. This session will be part mini-workshop and part relaxed 'crafternoon' style illustrator catch up. Writers also welcome.

OCT 21 - Drawn by Her: An Exhibition of WA Women Illustrators

When: 21 October to 4 November 2024

Where: Moores Gallery, Fremantle

The Literature Centre and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Australia West, are thrilled to invite Western Australian women illustrators to showcase their work in an upcoming exhibition, Drawn by Her. This exciting, female-led exhibition will celebrate the incredible talent and diversity of women illustrators across WA.

If you’re a female-identifying illustrator based in WA, we’d love for you to submit your original illustrations, with or without process work, for a chance to be featured at the Moores Gallery from October 21st to November 4th, 2024.
