Playful Hearts, Lyrical Arts, and Editor Smarts: Crafting Kidlit Magic with Aixa Pérez-Prado

Ready to sprinkle your stories with the magic that captivates kids and craftmanship that editors crave? In this workshop, we’ll dive into the playful, perplexing, and peculiar world of kidlit. Through hands-on tasks, we’ll unravel editor enigmas, wander through wondrous words, and review rhyme crimes. You’ll walk away with a spellbook of strategies to make your writing robust and a treasure trove of tricks to transform your manuscripts from meh to marvelous.

Aixa Pérez-Prado is an Argentine born author/illustrator, sensitivity reader, translator, and university professor. She has a BA in English/Creative Writing, an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and a PhD in Social Science & Education. She is currently a Professor of Education at Florida International University. Aixa is a Global Learning faculty member who teaches pedagogy for language learning, cross cultural communication, peace linguistics, and diversity of meaning. Her educational publications include, LAF with the Habits of Mind: Strategies and Activities for Diverse Language Learners ( 2021), and Children’s Literature Aligned with SDGs to Promote Global Competencies: A Practical Resource for Early Childhood Education (2024). Aixa also writes and illustrates books for children that highlight issues of identity, belonging, diversity and communication across cultures. Her kidlit publications include, CITY FEET (Reycraft, 2023), OUR WORLD: ARGENTINA (Barefoot Books, 2023) and MERCEDES SOSA: VOICE OF THE PEOPLE (Lee & Low, 2024). We hope you’ll join us after the workshop at Panera Bread in Mission Bay Plaza. 20437 State Road 7 Boca Raton, FL 33498. Make a right out of the library onto 441. Make a right at Glades Road, then a right into the Mission Bay Plaza. Panera will be close to Glades Road.
