Charlie Horse is a playful, rhyming adventure about a curious little horse who learns meaningful life lessons from her friends. Each character teaches her something special, encouraging children to embrace who they are and share their unique gifts with the world. All proceeds go to HorsePlay, a nonprofit providing therapeutic riding and hippotherapy for kids with disabilities.
This story was inspired by my daughter’s journey with hippotherapy and my love for horses. My 3-year-old, Ally, is still learning to walk and talk, so I wanted to create a story that encourages children to celebrate their differences and feel proud of who they are. Plus, Charlie Horse gives back to a cause so close to my heart.
I’ve learned that you can’t be afraid to network and reach out to others for help and guidance. I had to step out of my comfort zone so many times, connecting with professionals to learn new skills, from publishing to marketing. Had I not done that, my book wouldn’t be as successful as it’s been. Now, I’m even speaking and reading at schools—something I never expected at the start of this journey!
I’m a mom with three young kids, so they definitely keep me on my toes! In addition, I’m a board member for HorsePlay, the nonprofit that benefits from Charlie Horse sales. The horse therapy program has become a true passion of mine, and I love supporting the program, the kids, and all the families involved. It’s a big part of what makes this journey so meaningful for me.
I connected with a local writer who walked me through the entire publishing process. Without her, I don’t think I would have actually “gone for it.” She made me believe I could do it and
broke down publishing into steps that made everything feel less overwhelming. The cool part is that a young writer recently reached out to me for help, and now I get to do the same for her! I love how supportive the writing community is—it’s come full circle.
I want to continue writing books that tie back to causes close to my heart. My goal is for this journey to be a giving one, where my story and legacy reflect a commitment to inspiring and supporting meaningful causes. I have so many ideas I’m excited about, and expanding Charlie Horse into a series is just the beginning of all the possibilities ahead!
Be true to your voice and purpose. Don’t be afraid to write from the heart, even if it feels vulnerable. Remember, no one else can tell your story, and that authenticity will resonate with readers—especially children. Also, trust the process and enjoy every step. It’s a journey worth taking!
