Michelle Menashy Logo Design Winner

An Interview with Logo Design Winner, Michelle Menashy by Debbie Vilardi

This issue, I’m excited to welcome and congratulate Michelle G. Menashy, our logo contest winner. Michelle, what was your path to becoming an illustrator/artist?

I have to make art. It’s been part of me since childhood. I made collages; painted everything from clothes to my ceiling. (Sorry, Mom and Dad.) I designed gardens and cooked lavish meals—plating food like art. I even designed homes for my goldfish.

Abruptly, I was hit by a drunk driver while crossing the street. My family, pups, and painting were my survival. I went on to earn my college degree in illustration. I freelanced in photography and exhibited paintings in galleries. My first job was illustrating for numerous magazines. Then I designed multimedia, print, and packaging for the children’s, superhero fiction, and entertainment markets. Soon after, I became an art director and leaped into advertising for countless Fortune 500 companies. All along, my love for picture books filled my head.

Wow! You had a storied career, but now you’re focusing in on picture books. Why did you join SCBWI and how have you benefited from your membership?

I wanted to meet other artists as passionate about picture books as I am. It’s been wonderful!

It sure is. What was your inspiration for the logo you designed?

As a child, each summer after school let out, my family lived on a boat. Whales, dolphins, and sharks swam beside us. It was magical.

That’s so fun! It sounds almost idyllic, as long as the weather was good.

How has your style evolved over time and why?

My art changes as my life changes. The more I learn, the more I learn to see.

In my work, I continuously strive to capture energy and emotion.

And what are you working on now?

My picture books; years of writing and drawing are coming to life.

What advice do you have for other artists?

Be yourself, authentic, even with illness and challenges. (I’ve had more than I can count.) We are all unique. Make your art!

Oh yes! We are all unique creators. So what are your favorite media and sources of inspiration?

Paint, pencil, and digital (but I play with everything).

My Inspiration—living creatures on land and in the sea. They each have their own ecosystem. I love planting seeds and growing vegetables. Each vegetable has its own pests and beneficial insects, its own animal waiting to CHOMP!

I love that you use the word “play” here. That alone may inspire someone else.

Is there anything else you'd like readers to know about you?

Our pup’s name is Fimsley :)

What a playful name. Thank you for contributing your winning logo and for joining us here.
