Penelope Dullaghan is an accomplished, acclaimed artist/illustrator with a propensity for expressing joy through form and color. She works in children’s publishing, editorial, and advertising, and dabbles extravagantly in any medium she can find — especially printmaking, paint & cut paper. No matter the method, though, she creates images that are distinguished by simplicity and guided by curiosity. 🖌️Penelope works from her studio in Indianapolis, where she lives with her writer husband and artist-in-training teen.
A New and Improved Mentorship Experience
While there are some exciting changes coming to the mentorship program, the one-on-one mentorship is still the cornerstone of this experience. You and your mentor will have a minimum of six submissions and feedback, scheduled at your own pace.
Two Options for the Mentorship Winner
The 2025 Illustration Mentorship with Penny Dullaghan will be here before you know it. This mentorship, you have the option of working with your mentor to make your portfolio more professional, or you may choose to work on a picture book dummy to get it submission-ready. The choice is yours.
To Prepare for the Mentorship
This year, SCBWI-MI is hosting a Summer Camp webinar series. Our illustration session with Kaz Windness is a great opportunity because Kaz is sharing information on storyboarding. This is a chance to give yourself a leg up on the competition. Click HERE for more info about the Summer Camp series and Kaz’s session.
Eligibility
The illustration mentorship is open to all SCBWI members (PAL, full, associate, and student) who live in Michigan and have not previously won a mentorship for illustration in any category. We call this the “Won and Done” rule, and it helps us ensure that everyone has an opportunity to benefit from a mentorship.
Exception: If you’ve won a picture book or novel text mentorship, you are still eligible to enter for illustration.
