Introducing Our Regional Equity and Inclusion Awards 2023
SUBMISSIONS CLOSED FOR EQI AWARDS 2023.
The Tapestry Voices team from the SF/North and East Bay chapter of SCBWI is pleased to announce the 2023 Equity & Inclusion (EQI) awards will be open for submissions from August 1 to September 15, 2023. With these awards, we continue to seek increased diversity in children’s literature, both in terms of content creators and the content itself.
We aim to award up to two creators, one for writing and one for illustrating, (up to 6 awards total) in each of the following categories*:
REACH: TOV Creator Award — to invite creators with backgrounds and experiences currently underrepresented in our industry into our organization and community
Non-members only
INCLUDE: TOV Content Award — to encourage members of ALL backgrounds and experiences to create content that accurately and positively reflects the diversity of the world
Members and non-members
BELONG: TOV Member Award — to elevate the voices of current members of backgrounds and experiences currently underrepresented in our industry
Member only
Winners will receive free membership to SCBWI for one year and one free regional conference or intensive. We will consider:
• Board Books
• Picture Books
• Chapter Books
• Middle Grade
• Young Adult
• Nonfiction
• Graphic Novel
• Short Story
• Poetry
* In some years, not all six awards may be given.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Please review the guidelines for submitting your work and send your writing or illustration sample as an attachment to scbwi.sfneb.eqi@gmail.com
1. Body of the email
• Your Name
• Your submission type: Author or Illustrator
• County where you live
• Award category you are submitting to (REACH, INCLUDE, or BELONG)
• Submitter category (SCBWI Member or Non-member)
• Format (Board Book, Picture Book, Chapter Book, Middle Grade, Young Adult, Nonfiction, Graphic Novel, Short Story, Poetry, or Other)
All attached documents should have the title and page number in the header
NO AUTHOR INFORMATION should appear on any part of the document
2. For Writers — up to 10 pages
• Word doc/docx as attachment
• Title of Work_Format (Example: Mochi Queen_Middle Grade)
• Standard 8 1/2 x 11″ paper size
• 1” margins
• Times New Roman 12-point
• Double-spaced
3. For illustrators — 3 to 5 images
• Image as attachment
• Title of image_Format (Example: Itchy School Uniform_Picture Book)
• JPEGs only, please
• Your images can be any size you are comfortable with, but please keep them under 4 megabytes
• The resolution should be above 72ppi and up to 300ppi
Please submit to ONE category only
Submissions open on August 1, 2023 and close September 15, 2023.
Submissions are welcome for both existing San Francisco North and East Bay SCBWI members, and non-members from the counties our region serves (Marin, Sonoma, Solano, Napa, Contra Costa, Mendocino, and Alameda counties)

The EQI Awards were established to promote inclusion and bring the conference experience to applicants of any underrepresented group in children’s publishing including, but not limited to, those marginalized due to race/ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender and gender identity, socioeconomic status, geography, citizenship, and religion.
We continue to seek increased diversity in children’s literature, both in terms of content creators and the content itself. Submissions are welcome for both existing San Francisco North and East Bay SCBWI members, and non-members from the counties our region serves (Marin, Sonoma, Solano, Napa, Contra Costa, Mendocino, and Alameda counties).
