First Page/First Look

Have you ever wondered what an agent or editor is thinking when they read that all-important first page or see your illustrations for the first time? Here is your chance to find out!

📖 The First Page sessions give participants the chance to share the first manuscript page (up to 450 words) of their picture book or novel in front of the room and get immediate feedback from a faculty member and a published author. See examples of formatting below.

🎨 Illustrators in the First Look session will show a few images from their illustrator gallery at scbwi.org to our Art Director and Illustrator Coordinator, Robin Chilstrom, and hear their first impressions.

There is no additional charge for this session, but only 10 participants will be able to read/share their work. To be considered to present you must select your desired First Page/Look workshop on the registration page AND submit your work by October 7 at the link below. See the schedule link on the main page for workshop faculty.

If you would like to be considered please click this Google form link and paste your first page up to 450 words (don't end in the middle of a sentence, though!) or the link to your scbwi.org illustrator gallery.

Ten participants in each category will be notified by November 2 that they have been selected to share their first pages or images.

This session is not for the faint of heart! It can be difficult to hear critiques of your work, especially in front of a crowd. Please do not apply if you are uncomfortable reading in front of a crowd or have doubts your work will be ready to share.

The deadline to submit your work is OCTOBER 7, 2024!
